Early in my coaching career I admired certain coaches because of their success, charisma and knowledge of baseball. I quickly learned that by hanging out with them I was going to places that caused me guilt and shame and talking about things I knew was detrimental to my spiritual well being and my role as a father and husband. I was similar to the “leaders” John spoke of in chapter 12, verse 43: “they loved praise from men more than praise for God.” When I eventually took a stand, God placed wonderful Christian mentors in my life. For that, I am truly thankful. “Always drink upstream from the herd!”
