Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were friends as they were helping America become a young, independent nation. One problem, their views on how to govern the nation were very different. Consequently, they became bitter political and personal enemies. It wasn’t until later in life that a mutual friend encouraged them to restore their relationship, which occurred through a series of letter writing. Historians now cherish these letters and they are known as the “Adams-Jefferson letters.” These two reconciled friends died on the same day, JULY 4, 1826; the fiftieth anniversary of their signing of the Declaration of Independence!
Forgiveness and reconciliation can make a positive difference for us and in our relationship with God.
“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
(2 Corinthians 5:20)
