I’m always very sad to read in Mark 15:34 about God turning His back on Jesus as He was on the cross crying out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Paul David Tripp explains beautifully why this painful experience had to occur:

“Jesus faced separation from His Father in the here and now so that we would know the Father’s acceptance now and for eternity.”

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
‭‭(2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭21‬)
