Peter was a Jewish zealot who hated Romans. Matthew was a Jewish tax collector who worked for the Romans and collected exorbitant taxes from Jews and then pocketed plenty for himself. He was hated by his fellow Jews and, no doubt, disrespected by the Romans.
Jesus invited Peter and Matthew to play on the same team! It was the love of Christ that brought them together.
Jesus said,
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
