Joy is the kind of happiness that doesn’t Depend on what happens.” (Unknown)

“Happy New Year!” This is the exaltation we hear every year on New Year’s Eve and throughout January. I like it. I like it because people are proclaiming hope for those they greet and for themselves, as well.

The “New Year” always reminds me of the happy times that occurred during the previous year, and yes, the disappointments, as well. Some years even bring pain and sorrow. The reality of happiness, disappointments, pain and sorrow is that they are all temporary emotions. Happiness comes and goes because of relationships, finances and other circumstances. And, thankfully, pain and sorrow do not linger forever, even though at times it feels as though they may.

So, as we enter a new year, allow me to deviate from the norm. Let us usher in 2016 in a different way. Instead of a “Happy New Year,” I would like to wish you a “Joyous New Year.” Since happiness is temporary, may the deep and lasting joy that is available to all who know Christ be with you throughout the New Year. In John 15:9-11, Jesus tells us of His great love for us; in verse 11, He shares this great truth; “I have told you this so my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

True joy transcends the rolling waves of circumstance. There will always be hardships in life, no matter how “happy” we want the New Year to be. But, through a consistent relationship with Christ, we have access to joy every day and in all situations.

May 2016 be the most joyous year ever for you.
