Paul David Tripp says that much of our disappointment in relationships is not because we have an unrealistic view of others, but because we have a distorted view of ourselves. In other words, we want everyone else to live up to the standards we only imagine that we have. When we honestly self-evaluate, we realize how much grace has been extended to us, and how little grace we give to others.

“Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”
(Luke 11:46)

Many times leaders, coaches and fans expect much more from athletes than they have ever demanded of themselves. If you ever want to shut down a dialogue with an athlete, start it with “back in the day.”
