Perhaps you’ve heard the old Mills Brothers song, “You Always Hurt the One You Love.” (By the way, that song is from my mother’s era). Even though this song was written with a romantic message, the message is close to being accurate in all of our relationships. We allow ourselves to be negative, sarcastic, and sometimes even demeaning to those we love most. We hurt the ones we love. We become desensitized to their feelings because we’ve allowed ourselves to get in this negative and painful rut. It’s up to us to get out of the rut we have created. We choose our behaviors. Laurie Buchanan puts it this way:
“Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.”
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
(Proverbs 12:18)
