As a young boy I once spoke a hurtful, hateful thing to a neighbor boy. He never said a word back to me, he just looked at me with pain in his eyes, turned and walked away. How much damage was done? It destroyed and killed our relationship. I still remember vividly decades later. My apology was not nearly as impactful as were the damaging words.

“God has given us two ears, but one tongue, to show that we should be swift to hear, but slow to speak. God has set a double fence before the tongue, the teeth and the lips, to teach us to be wary that we offend not with our tongue.”
(Thomas Watson)

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
(Proverbs 18:21)
