A former MLB Chaplain, Walt Wiley, taught me something about baseball a few years ago. He asked me, “what is the major role of a lead off hitter?” My answers, “get on base.” No. “See a lot of pitches, get the pitch count up, relay info to the rest of the lineup as to movement, velocity, etc.” No. A little frustrated, I said, “OK, Walt, what’s the lead off hitters job?” The former chaplain said, “to make it home!” Yes, a lead off hitter should have a good  on base percentage, but he also needs to be a good baserunner and have support from his team to help get him home. As Believers, we need to have faith, serve well and surround ourselves with other Believers who will encourage us Home.
